Donka Receives $55,000 Grant from Tellabs to Train Educators in the Use of Assistive Technologies to Aid Students with Disabilities

Donka, Inc. has been awarded a $55,000 grant from the Tellabs Foundation to expand their Train the Trainer program.  Through the Train the Trainer program, future special educators from Benedictine University and Trinity College learn about assistive technology and the use of computers in expanding possibilities for the special needs students in their classrooms.

Existing professionals who work with persons with disabilities are also trained in software and adaptive equipment to encourage their patrons’ independent use of technology.  Participants are trained at Donka’s lab at the DuPage Convalescent Center in Wheaton or through on-site visits using Donka’s mobile lab.  “This is such a wonderful opportunity for Donka’s instructors to give future teachers and professionals the tools they need to help persons with disabilities be more independent in every function of their lives,” says Donka’s Executive Director Leanne Stavenger-Vos.

Donka, Inc. was established in 1987 with the mission of changing the lives of persons with disabilities through the use of assistive technology.  Donka offers the only free computer-training program for persons with disabilities in DuPage and eastern Kane Counties.  For more information, or to schedule a consultation, please call 630-665-8169 or email info@donkainc.org.
